Pamela Joyner’s keen eye transforms Presidio home

“At an opera party one winter, I decided I wanted an old house,” she said. “There’s a romance about old houses. I thought I’d love to find an ugly duckling and fix it up.”
In February 2006, they bought the place on Presidio Terrace, a 9,200-square-foot, four-level home with a Japanese garden and koi pond. With the help of architect Dan Phipps and Stroub Construction, as well as her keen flair for color and placement, the couple rebuilt, decorated and moved in in August 2007.
The home is a clever contrast with English, Chinese and French antiques as well as contemporary African American art. Joyner collects post-World War II painters, such as Hale Woodruff, Charles Alston, Sam Gilliam, Reginald Gammon, Herbert Gentry and her favorite, Richard Mayhew.
“It’s fun and conservative at the same time,” Joyner said. “That’s kind of who we are.”
